The thicker core of the pencils does not break very easily and the pencils can be sharpened using an exacto knife. The pencils are compatible with both Derwent Drawing and Graphitint pencils, but charcoal pencils or pastel can be used as a background and then wax based pencils can be used on top, rather than the other way around. All colors in the set have received a lightfast rating of 8 except for the Ink Blue, which has been rated as 7, and the pencils are compatible with varieties of paper. However, the tips of the pencils are quite thick and, therefore, they are not designed for fine details. The set includes 24 colors, namely Light sienna, Solway blue, Ink blue, Smoke blue, Pale cedar, Green shadow, Crag green, Olive earth, Warm earth, Brown ochre, Wheat, Yellow ochre, Sepia red, Mars orange, Sanguine, Venetian red, Terracotta, Mars violet, Ruby earth, Chocolate, Ivory black, Warm grey, Cool grey, and Chinese white.
