Vieux musicien gourmand, collectionneur d'oeuvres d'art bientôt cerné par la haine des plus vils intrigants d'en haut comme d'en bas, guetté par la mort mais lié à Schumcke d'une indéfectible amitié - un moment le livre eut pour titre Les Deux Musiciens -, le cousin Pons est la figure finalement sublime d'un roman sombre, travaillé par la dérision et l'angoisse, mais que l'humour et la drôlerie éclairent pour en faire également - le mot est de Balzac - une comédie terrible.
